Who Are You Listening To?

The world is changing. It’s easy to see.

Society wants faster, easier, prettier, and cheaper. They listen to the up-and-comers, the loudest voices and the fattest pockets. Never mind truth, tradition, or integrity. Those things are too out-dated and for the dying.

Now let’s beg the question of ourselves: who are we listening to inside of our faith circles?

It’s easy to go with the popular crowd who veers towards modern Christianity. Feel good experiences that may or may not line up with Scripture are all the rage.

Then there’s the flipside. Tradition is pretty cool, too. Hymnals are collector’s items, pipe organs bring up memories, and fire and brimstone sermons set us ablaze long enough to get us geared up for the week ahead.

All is well and good until we need a soul check and think about salvation. People start to squirm in their seats when feelings and trendy thought processes are trumped by truth.

Whose word are you listening to? Man’s version of Scripture and God have become increasingly flawed because we forget to look at God in His sovereign state.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 NIV

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

There’s a great turning away in the name of revival. Man-made versions twist God’s words causing us to fall deeper into the impaired human condition. We’re led further astray into the deception of twisted Scripture and tingling ears. We focus on all the feels instead of the condition of our souls.

It’s time to take a pause and to learn about discernment. The true Spirit-filled person will be guided by the Lord to see and know the truth.

John 8:47

Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.

When we are saved we are listening to the call from the Lord. He guides us to accept that He’s been there all along and that we needed to soften our hardened life that’s been fighting against Him. When we finally see the truth, not only are our ears opened, but so are our hearts and minds. Our souls become free and we truly know what it’s like to belong to the Kingdom of God. We truly hear Him through His Word.

Man cannot stop us by putting requirements or restraints on our faith. Man cannot say experience counts more than communion, study, and prayer. Start a new trend of truth backed by The Word.

  1. Yeah, ‘truth is for the dying’,
and I find that so ironic,
    ’cause it’s actually implying
    that truth’s a vital tonic.
It is, of course, that very thing
    that animates our cherished goals,
and only truth itself can bring
    salvation to our longing souls.
There’s nothing in the bling and glam
can ever give us what we need:
communion with the great I Am,
lifesaving love that bids us heed
that there is only but one gate,
and by Truth we must choose our fate.

  2. This was such an important truth – we must know to whom we are listening. We need greater discernment in these days we are living.

  3. It’s so easy to hear, but not listen. Thank you for the reminder to evaluate what we hear and study for ourselves with the Holy Spirit as our guide.
