Love That Is Not to be Shelved

There’s a special shelf in my dish cabinet.

On this shelf sits the love of a grandmother. A set of delicately painted grocery store chinaware weighs upon that shelf bought with special savings. Always a set of thirteen in case one breaks, the sweet flowers remind me of the sweet face who bought me my only hope chest item. There was no chest, but a dowry of dishes would follow me into adulthood.

She set out to save so I wouldn’t have to. She set out to gift so I would have one less worry on my wedding day. A gift of love rolled into practicality and matching teacups meet me on special occasions and larger gatherings.

A smile brushes past me as I reach past the self searching for the every day that is often tossed away with chips and breaks.

The chinaware has beat the odds.

It has survived seven cross-country moves and four jaunts across the Pacific Ocean almost unscathed. One tiny chip in that 13th teacup won’t bring us down. Love has survived.

Do you know that there’s something stronger than world-traveling china? Do you realize that there’s a love that runs so much deeper than that of a grandmother for her dear grand-daughter? It goes beyond the years of saving money for a dowry and taking up space in a basement waiting for the day of wedded bliss.

Romans 6:23 NIV

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Eternal life.

Life everlasting is a free gift bought by our Lord on a tree. He hung there not only for a grandmother to  pay love forward but for each of us to have eternity in His love. This truth is the only gift every needed. It opens the door to a life of freedom.

2 Corinthians 9:15

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Thank you, Lord, for your selfless gift and for showing us true love! This love extends beyond cabinets full of china and trips across the ocean.  This love moves the grave so that we can rest with our Savior in worship forever.

This is true love, a gift that’s beyond any human thoughtfulness. Jesus’ sacrifice cannot be shelved, but we are to wear it upon our lives and walk in His love all of our days.
