Haggai One

Haggai 1:13 NIV

Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people: “I am with you,” declares the Lord.

The people made excuses for years. The Lord’s remnant was saved for service, witness, and hope, but they wasted time in material things, and lost out in others. They built beautiful houses and lived in rags. They planted much, but harvested little. Poverty knocked at their door and they let it in as a chain of justification for their waywardness.

The LORD’S house could no longer sit in piles of rocks while the remnant lived in fancy houses. God’s priorities should be our priorities. The people could not make excuses any more as they were confronted.

Then in walks Haggai, a prophet of the LORD. He calls them out and tells them they weren’t saved to just sit idly by. The LORD spoke to them through Haggai and when they heard His voice, they feared Him all the more. The people no longer dragged their feet but got up and moved. Their hearts became stirred by the LORD and they saw what their next steps needed to be.

We, as people of all generations and ages, misplace priorities, too. We sit and wait, allocate time to worldly ways, and waste so much. We need to come back to the place we started, at the foot of the cross and allow the LORD to stir our hearts once again. We need to be open with great expectancy and break the bondage we have to earthly matters. Seeking the Lord’s will take us beyond ourselves, our material things, and this earth. It moves us to Heaven and we can do Heaven’s work while we wait. God will see us through to completion.

  1. This is so true. We were not created to sit by idly. His priorities must be our priorioties. Thanks for sharing.
