Dreaming of a future to be had as a sheepherder, David never once thought that he would slay giants in the name of the Lord or become a king running after God. He was living a simple life with simplistic expectations. The stone and the sling would never be dreamt of something that would bring nations to their knees or glory to the God who created the dream state in the clouds.
He was dreaming of keeping bears at bay and warding off wolves. David’s wildest dreams never placed him taking down giants or of toting a crown. The clouds never portrayed the son of Jesse dancing for the Lord in the streets while ruling the nation. Fluffy cumulation of rain never pointed to being the father of the one true king that was to follow his lineage.
2 Samuel 7:8-10 ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed.’
A promise fulfilled. An unrealized dream come true. David would rule a nation and father the ruler of the world. His name was great, and the one to come, the greatest name of all.
David dreamed small, but we have the liberty to dream big.
