His Delight

What do you think of when you hear the word “delight”?

Our minds may wander to delicious foods, sweet moments, or a blushing bride.

Can you imagine a sleeping child wrapped in her mother’s arms? The precious babe warm against her mother’s chest is safe as she gazes upon this tiny being that she now cares about for the rest of her life.   She delights in each moment, even through exhaustion. Every need is joyfully given to the helpless child.

We have to imagine all that love doted onto this tiny baby plus an eternity more. It is poured down on us from our Heavenly Father. He delights in His creation, His children, even when we turn our backs on Him in our stubbornness.

The LORD delights in you. Isaiah 62:4 ESV

It is hard at times to imagine the immensity of the Lord’s love for us. We get so caught up in what society wants or even what our own selfish ways demand. We’re always looking for more, or bigger, or better, or something else. What we truly need we already have. We just need to accept it. Embrace this love and live by it. Live loved!

Easier said than done, but it is something to strive for. It is something that we can turn back to the Lord in praise as He nurtures our very beings.

The next time we walk past a mirror, or see a reflection in a window, we can take pause and give ourselves a long look without the selfish need of vanity. We can, instead, remind ourselves that the Lord delights in the reflection right there. He didn’t create in vain or on a whim. He took great care in every detail, creating us in His image. Let us turn this reminder into glorifying Him with the way we carry and treat ourselves.

  1. This is “delight”ful truth, and so needed as there’s a fair amount of inaccurate teaching about God as cosmic spoil sport who’s just waiting to ruin our good time. If only we could grasp the depth of His great love for us and the lengths to which He has gone in order to draw us to Himself!

  2. True, the way we carry and treat ourselves matters a lot. Once a church minister said “you may be the only Jesus someone can see. Make a difference in that persons life.” When we grow in faith and service for the Lord, others grow too courtesy of us. That is the best gift we can give to God. It’s never difficult as we sometimes think, just making the right choices.

    1. Right on! I always have to remember my attitude and presentation in the face of unbelievers and remind my children of the same. We need to share the Gospel by the way we live our lives. Thank you for reminding me that we are the only Jesus that some people may see.

  3. A great reminder! I’m reading a book called The Sacrament of Happy, by Lisa Harper and in it she talks about how it’s often hard for us to imagine God the Father or Jesus as being happy. But the Bible has verses about God delighting in us that remind us of this characteristic of God. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. I will have to look that book up! Sounds right up my alley. I think of God and Jesus as being stern way more than I think of them as being happy, but you’re right. God made us to be in communion with Him, He created happy. 🙂 Thank you for your encouraging words.

  4. Love this! My word for 2018 is Delight!! It is such a loving word between me and Jesus! Thank you for this beautiful post! ❤
