The Blood Sacrifice

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

It’s the hymn that is ever so popular during the Lenten Season. We let the words roll off our tongues like an old friend, yet they never take root inside of us. Maybe it’s because we know they will be back in a year, but singing out about the ultimate sacrifice should be what grounds us all days.

The blood of Jesus, without it, there is no hope or assurance of freedom. There would be no salvation to cling to through our days.

If it’s important enough to be written down, then God wants us to listen, to know- the blood is the atonement for our sins, the price that we must all pay. It is the fee that Jesus took to the cross for us.

Leviticus 17:11 ESV  For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

Atonement is death. You cannot atone with money, treasures, material items, thoughts or prayers. Atonement is physical, it is painful and bloody, and it is self-giving.  It is the fulfillment for sin.

The perfect lamb was needed for so long, but the world found itself in a place where an animal couldn’t cut it anymore. God knew more was needed. He knew that it was time for people to see Him give of Himself in a way that He never did before. The Lord came and sacrificed Himself by sending His own Son to the slaughter.

John saw Him coming and he knew this day would come from the womb.

John 1:29 Behold, the Lamb of God: The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

He, the ultimate, most-perfect and final lamb, arrived.  Jesus is the final atonement. He is the one who takes away the sins of the world.

1 Peter 1:18-20  Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold,  but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was fore- known before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you.

Jesus bought us back from sin. He redeemed us. Jesus set us free from slavery to sin.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

No amount of work or deed could buy us from an eternity away from God. Only a perfect blood sacrifice could allow for such a thing.

We have bondage no more! We can now live in the freedom of the Lord.

There is no earning of forgiveness, we don’t deserve it. We can’t  get a free pass in any circumstance. Only God allows us in and that is through His Son Jesus Christ. He paid the price and suffered for us. Jesus created the open door. We had been bought into salvation and we must believe that this price was paid for by the Son.

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.

Where do we go from this point? What should we do with this freedom? Sharing this key with others is the next step. Love others enough to share freedom with them. We are commanded to do so, and we must run with it. Run after Jesus, and bring your brothers and sisters with you. Share the hope and joy of the Lord. The blood paid the way. Rejoice!

He, the ultimate, most-perfect and final lamb, has arrived. Jesus is the final atonement. Click To Tweet
