Anchored: A Hold on Hope

I once heard a story of an anchor that got stuck in the sandy bottom of a bay.

Try as they might, the sailors couldn’t get the anchor free.  Sending extra ropes and hooks gave no help, and directing the ship in circles barely loosened the determined heavy metal from loosening her grip. They were stuck.

The ship was anchored. No storm could wash it away and no creature could veer her out to sea. The ship stood, secure to the bay that held her captive. Anchored in the water, the steadfastness of the security that it provided stood its ground.

Hope is like this anchor. It’s sturdy, solid and sometimes stubborn. It’s reliable and steadfast. Hope stands its ground when storms arise and danger approaches.

Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord.

There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.

Proverbs 23:17-18 NIV

Hope won’t allow for us to stand still, stuck in a sandy bottom, but will anchor us to truth in the Lord. He continuously provides no matter our situation or whereabouts.

God isn’t just a God of convenience. He is right there on that ship, in a plane flying high above that sea, and on the shore waiting. The Lord is with us no matter where we go and we can rely on the hope instilled into us through His Spirit.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain

Hebrews 6:19

God’s word isn’t some cliché to wear on our sleeve when things are well and easy. It’s truth in the storm and good for all things.  We need to tie that to our heart-strings and keep well in the hope that it provides.

  1. Thanks for this! The image of the anchor is always a powerful picture of our hope in Jesus and the hope we cling to.
